Many Christmas resources show snow, but our students celebrate in the heat with cricket, prawns and beach days. An Aussie Christmas theme helps every student see their own summer in the season, and it gives you great material for writing and art.
Start with a story
Read Santa is Coming to Australia aloud. Ask: "How is Christmas in Australia different from the pictures we often see?" Make a class chart: snow vs sun, sleigh vs ute, roast vs barbecue.
Activities by year level
- Early Years, Foundation / Pre-Primary: colour pages from the Aussie Christmas - Mega Colouring Book and talk about the animals in the pictures: kangaroos, koalas and kookaburras.
- Year 1–2: draw "Santa's summer holiday" and label it with summer words.
- Year 3–6: write a recount or persuasive piece: "The best way to spend Christmas in Australia".
Craft and display
Make Aussie-themed decorations with Calico Reindeers Pack of 5 (dress them up as "kanga-deer"!) and Cardboard Standing Christmas Characters - Pack of 12. Frame your wall display with the Christmas Large Border or the Christmas Scalloped Border.
Reward and celebrate
Aussie Christmas Metallic Stickers make great end-of-term rewards and card decorations.
