Understanding Maths is a series of mathematics books with content aligned to the F–10 Australian Mathematics Curriculum (v9.0). The content is designed to enable students to achieve the required student outcomes and is organised into the six Strands:
- Number
- Algebra
- Measurement
- Space
- Statistics
- Probability (Years 3 to 6 only)
Students using the book will benefit from the very clear explanations of rules and concepts that are required in the various Strands. Each page covers only one concept or rule to ensure high levels of understanding. Each formula, rule or set of steps is highlighted in larger print to assist learning. The fully worked examples that are provided are designed to reinforce learning.
Key Features
- The content of each book is divided into 9-11 convenient learning sections within the Strands
- The student outcomes outlined in the F–10 Australian Mathematics Curriculum (v9.0) is provided for each Strand. The content in the learning sections gives students maximum opportunity to achieve these outcomes.
- Graded assessments in levels have been provided at the end of each section to ascertain the degree of learning achievements. Teachers will value these follow-up assessment tasks.
- Each page provides clarity by specifically covering one idea or rule. Clear examples and solutions reinforce learning.
- The detailed and clear explanations support learning and result in high levels of understanding. Parents value this approach as they support their children's learning in mathematics.
- Each formula, rule or set of steps is highlighted in larger print for students to enhance their learning. Students are able to efficiently refer back to previous topics as required.
- Each page contains at least one fully worked example. This reinforces understanding as well as showing the student how to apply each formula to typical questions.
- Included in each graded assessment at the end of each section is page referencing for students to refer back to if required. The detailed assessment tasks ensure students are widely assessed in order to receive extensive feedback.
- Solutions at the back of the book are clearly provided. The large number of pages given to solutions ensures quick referencing for teachers and students.
- An additional section, "Money and Maths" has been provided to enhance learning. It is a very practical section outlining the money system in Australia and its relevance to the lives of students.

The Australian mathematics curriculum caters for the acquisition of basic concept skills and processes. It contains three content strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Each of these are divided into a number of sub-strands or topics, which set out what needs to be learnt. Entwined with these are the four proficiency strands of Understanding, Fluency, Problem solving and Reasoning, which determine how the content is studied and developed so that mathematical learning and understanding continue to progress over the years.
This book generally follows the basic format of the Australian Curriculum Mathematics, which provides that by the end of Year 1, students should be able to do the following:
