The Junior English Skills for Western Australia titles are workbooks that teach junior years students the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary.
Each title is divided into units. Each unit targets a specific English skill and includes explanations of key terms and concepts, structured examples to guide students, and varied activities – including short-answer and extended response questions, fill-in-the-gap exercises and multiple-choice questions – to test students’ understanding.
Topics covered by the books include the fundamentals of grammar, such as subject-verb agreement and conjunctions; the basics of vocabulary-building, such as synonyms and antonyms; and the principles of punctuation, including commas, apostrophes and quotation marks.
The Western Australia editions of the Junior English Skills titles have new, purpose written content and are specifically calibrated to the WA English curriculum.
Each title features:
- explanations and examples to develop students’ knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary
- carefully scaffolded activities to help students progressively develop their skills
- engaging texts accompanying the activities for each unit, enabling students to practise their knowledge in context
- tips to help students remember and apply their learning
- answers, which are available on request.
Authors
The Junior English Skills for Western Australia titles have been written by two highly experienced English teachers: Adam Kealley and Lisa Neale.
Adam Kealley is the Head of Academics and Innovation at Wesley College in Perth. He is an experienced senior teacher who has also worked as a Chief Examiner of English for the WA School Curriculum and Standards Authority.
Lisa Neale has over 10 years’ experience as a secondary English teacher.
