This book has been compiled to introduce children to the process of reading.
Pages 1 to 24 provide training in visual discrimination so that likenesses and differences can be recognised in pictures and geometrical shapes.
Similar exercises, but with the use of single letters and then words, start on page 25 and end on page 37.
The child is not expected to read words but merely recognise likenesses and differences.
The alphabet is introduced on page 38. Each letter needs to be memorised by the sounds it makes when it begins a word. Note that the letters that have to be coloured are as close as possible to the shape of the written letters which are taught in schools. The printed letters in this book have been selected from one of the more common fonts used in children's books.
After mastering the letter sounds, the child can practise reading from page 47 onwards and should then be ready for Basic Skills Kindergarten (#50), Basic Skills Reading Practice (#68), Basic Skills Phonics Reading and Spelling (#60) and My First 1000 Reading and Spelling Words (#75).
