The focus of Power and Governance is an evaluation of the power structures and the quality of the accountability processes of the Australian political system.
The first half of the book, 'Political and legal power' examines the constitutional framework of power, including the federal system. In addition it analyses the real world processes of executive, legislative, and judicial power (concentrating on the Commonwealth level) in Australia, assessing critical perspectives and potential reforms. Lastly this half of the book assesses the quality of forms of political participation in Australian democracy.
The second half of the book assesses the quality of political and legal accountability processes as well as evaluating the protections of individual political and legal rights in Australia. Lastly it examines the impact of the Australian political and legal system of the experience of sub-groups in society, concentrating on the experience of indigenous Australians. Extensive comparisons with The United States are a feature of the book.
