By the end of the second millennium, a mere three years away, there will be no dry land above sea level. Cataclysmic global warming has caused the ocean's rapid rise and forced those desperate to survive only one choice: life at the bottom of the sea!

The world Rom lives in is entirely underwater, in an environment of controlled light, regulated seasons and artificial air. Key species of animals have been preserved in a giant underwater zoo. Rom's father, an internationally respected biologist, has been tasked with managing Deep Ark 6 - a vast installation specialising in the preservation of venomous snakes, reptiles and poisonous insects. He desperately wants Rom to follow in his academic footsteps, yet Rom feels as caged in as the very reptiles he lives alongside. He longs to venture away from the tight control of his father and head to the forbidden Surface. However, when Rom's wish is granted, it is not in a way he could ever have dreamed of . . .
