Lungs are an important organ in our body. They will ensure that oxygen is taken up by our body and that waste gases that our body doesn’t use, like carbon dioxide, is released from our body. How lungs work is a complex process, involving a lot of different steps. With the help of this lung demonstration model, we have tried to simplify this process. This lung demonstration model shows students how we inhale and exhale air. Also what happens with our lungs if we do so. This model consists of two rubber balloons, representing our two lungs. You will find a rubber elastic band at the bottom of the jar (our diaphragm) and the jar itself, which you can compare with our ribs. The straw coming out of the jar can be compared to our trachea. When we breath in, our diaphragm moves down, to create space for our lungs to expand. Because our lungs now have more space, air flows into our lungs: we are inhaling. When we exhale, the diaphragm moves back to it’s normal position, creating less space for the lungs: no space left for all the air in our lungs. This air has to leave our lungs again: we are exhaling. This is exactly what this lung demonstration model will show your students. Simply pull the rubber band at the bottom of the jar down, and you will see the ‘lungs’ (the balloons in the jar) fill up with air. By releasing the rubber band, the balloons will collapse again, they release the air from the balloons.This concept of inhaling and exhaling is often hard to understand for students. By showing them this model and demonstrating how our lungs work, they can visualise the process. This will help them understand how it works and remember the concept of respiration. The lung demonstration model measures 17 cm (W) x 17 cm (L) x 20 cm (H). It is a perfect model for both primary and high schools.
